The Third-Eye Chakra is located in the centre of the forehead, between the eyes. Known as Ajna in Sanskrit, which means “command”, the Third-Eye chakra is the centre of wisdom, intuition, and insight. It is associated with the pituitary gland, and is responsible for what we call our “sixth-sense”, our perception, and our ability to receive non-verbal messages – for some people that can manifest as clairvoyance. The colour for the Third-Eye chakra is Indigo, and its element is light. The developmental age of the Third-Eye Chakra is believed to be approximately between the ages of 35 – 42.
The Third-Eye Chakra affects how we perceive others and the world around others, and our ability to separate reality from fantasy or delusions. It also affects our ability to receive and follow our inner guidance or inner voice. In a nut-shell, the Third-Eye chakra governs and connects the conscious and unconscious mind. On a physical level, it rules the face, eyes, nose, brain, and sinuses.
When the Third-Eye Chakra is balanced, we have mental clarity, are able to focus and concentrate better, and are able to see the “big picture”. We possess strong intuition and wisdom, and are able to seek and find our own inner guidance. We have a good imagination and visualization skills, but are also able to separate between reality and imagination. We may also find that we have more vivid dreams, and we can remember them better. Those with an open and active Third-Eye chakra are often seen as very spiritual, and have an affinity for manifestation work, and sometimes possess psychic abilities.
An unbalanced Third-Eye chakra may manifest itself as feelings of confusion and difficulties focusing and concentrating. There may be a lack of imagination, or a distorted view of reality. It can also show up as egotism, arrogance, impatience, and authoritarianism. We may also find that we are prone to headaches, sinus and nose congestion, and disturbed sleep. Possible physical manifestations of an unbalanced Third-Eye chakra are neurological problems, brain tumors, strokes, panic attacks and depression.
