Knowing Your Chakras – The Throat Chakra

Posted in Body Mind Spirit, and Reiki Blog

After covering the Heart Chakra a few weeks ago, we are now moving on to our upper three chakras, starting with the Throat Chakra. The subject of chakras is actually very extensive, so what we aim to do here is to give you a general overview, as well as suggestions to strengthen and support each chakra.

Known as Vishuddha in Sanskrit, which means ‘pure’, the Throat Chakra is located at the base of the throat. It is the center of communication and self-expression, and is about speaking and expressing your inner truth. As the center of communication, the Throat Chakra is about both speaking AND listening, and is thus linked to the ears as well. The colour associated with the Throat Chakra is blue, and its element, ether. The developmental age of the Throat Chakra is believed to be approximately between the ages of 28 – 35.

The Throat Chakra governs the expression of our inner truth and creativity ( it is connected to the Sacral Chakra, which is the seat of creativity ), through speech or other ways of self-expression. Both teaching and learning are also affected by the balance of this chakra. The Throat Chakra rules the throat, neck, thyroid, parathyroid, mouth, teeth, tongue and jaw. When our Throat is in balance, we have no problems speaking and expressing our truth, or acting in accordance to it. We are able to communicate clearly our thoughts, feelings, ideas, or beliefs, and are also good listeners.

If our Throat Chakra is unbalanced, we may find ourselves having difficulties expressing ourselves, our thoughts or our feelings. There may be blame, denial, a fear of speaking our inner truth, or even habitual lying. We may not speak very much, or have a fear of public speaking; on the flipside, an over-active Throat Chakra may show up as talking too much and not listening. Possible physical manifestations of an unbalanced throat chakra are a sore throat, tonsillitis, laryngitis, dental issues, neck aches, thyroid problems, or hearing problems.
